Are there age limits?
It is never too soon to begin music instruction. Wunder Studios is licensed to offer the Musikgarten curriculum, an outstanding series of classes for children from birth to age six. Children love these. These classes build confidence, develop motor and sensory skills, teach music fundamentals, and foster a life-long love of music. We also offer group classes for 5 to 7 year olds that are a wonderful alternative to private lessons.
Parents often ask want to know when it is appropriate to begin private lessons. Although there are exceptions, children under the age of five are usually too young to begin private lessons. If you are interested in private lessons for your child, consult with one of our expert instructors. They will be happy to meet with you and explore the best options for you and your child.
If you are interested in private lessons, here a few things to consider to determine if your child is ready for private lessons. First of all, the child must be interested in learning to sing or play. Forcing a child who is not ready is usually a mistake. It often results in a bad experience that may turn the child away from music for many years. Second, private instruction is not appropriate until the child is physically ready to manipulate the instrument. Each instrument presents its own physical challenges. Some instruments are available in reduced sizes, which makes it possible to study at a younger age. Third, the child needs to have the ability to concentrate on a single task for a lengthy period. The development of musical skills requires practice, focus, and concentration. Starting a child on an instrument before they have the ability to apply themselves to practice usually results in a bad experience. One of our guiding principles is to give our students age appropriate tasks and, with input from the parents, find a balance that keeps the student engaged and motivated.
Voice has its own special considerations, since the body itself is the instrument and physical maturity plays a role in the production of a healthy sound. For young students interested in singing we offer voice lessons in small groups as well as group classes in musical theatre. Private voice lessons can be very demanding and they are usually are not recommended until at least junior high. There are some exceptions depending on the physical development of the individual voice and the maturity of the child. If your child is under the age of ten and you are serious about your child's future as a vocalist, we highly recommend that your child learn to play piano or violin before beginning private voice lessons. Either of these instruments can provide an excellent preparation for private vocal lessons because they develop the ear and teach fundamental musical skills. Well developed musicians who begin voice lessons as teenagers often have a great advantage over singers who have only studied voice.
Beyond these considerations, there is no limit to what you can achieve. Music is a birthright - virtually everyone can learn to sing or play an instrument, so do not let your age stand in your way. We welcome and encourage students of all ages and abilities.
